From Still to Dynamic

When we first entered the exhibition space at Galeri Siyah Beyaz [1], the all-white environment immediately gave us the feeling of having stepped into another universe. As we reflected on the reason and intention behind this pervasive whiteness, we realized that the white background enabled us to perceive the artworks with striking clarity and detail. The voids, corridors, and placement of stands within the spatial design also created a sense of depth, making the gallery feel more expansive than it actually was. Following our conversation with Ela Cindoruk [2], we understood that the exhibition consisted of three main sections.

The first section was titled “Sensiz Olmaz” and featured works composed of cubes designed by Yılmaz Aysan [3], covered with various patterns. These cubes were arranged in a clear hierarchical order in terms of size and scale, forming compositions that conveyed a sense of static balance.

In the following section, we moved into the jewelry designs created by Ela Cindoruk. This area displayed brooches, bracelets, rings, and necklaces made from various materials and floral motifs. Unlike the cube-based works, this section introduced a more dynamic, fragile, and delicate design language. Each piece carried a distinct meaning and reflected its own conceptual intention.

In the final section, we encountered works formed through a synthesis of these two design approaches, resulting in a new design language. We observed that the static and solid qualities of cube-based forms were transformed into more ambiguous configurations through the addition of jewelry elements, metal rods, and other materials. The cubes became dynamic forms that appeared movable, oscillating, and perpetually on the verge of losing balance. This new design approach generated works that appealed to diverse emotions and were named accordingly.

[1] Galeri Siyah Beyaz, founded in 1984, distinguished itself in the art scene as a gallery committed to quality. Its initially small space gradually became an attractive venue for artists producing experimental works beyond conventional frameworks. Galeri Siyah Beyaz set itself apart by embracing young artists and their innovative, experimental tendencies. Considering that many galleries in Turkey focus on established and market-oriented artists, Siyah Beyaz’s persistent stance—particularly in Ankara—can be described as “achieving the difficult.”
